Hypertelorism
Hypertelorism usually refers to widely spaced eyes. In order to determine the presence of this finding, a clinican will measure orbital distances against normograms. Distance between pupils will also be greater than normal. Likewise, hypertelorism can be identified on prenatal ultrasound based on measurements of between inner (medial) and outer (lateral) orbital walls. The importance of hypertelorism relates to its association with genetic syndromes.
