NTD
Neural Tube Defect. Includes (1) anencephaly, the failure of the rostral end of the neural tube to close leading to absence of skull and neural tissues and (2) spina bifida, the failure of the spinal cord to completely close. Folic acid is recommended prior to conception as neural tube closure takes place early – usually within 27 days of conception.
