RDS
Respiratory distress syndrome. RDS is a common lung disorder in premature infants. RDS usually develops in the first 24 hours after birth. The main cause of RDS is a lack of surfactant in the lungs. Pulmonary surfactant stabilizes the tiny air sacs in the lungs, the alveoli, and keeps them from collapsing between breaths. Credit: NHLBI (NIH)
