Submucosal cleft palate (SMCP)
Visual anatomical findings include (1) a bifid uvula, (2) a bony notch in the posterior part of the hard palate and/or (3) a muscle diastasis called a ‘zona pellucida’ or ‘translucent zone’. SMCP does not need to include all three findings and can be occult. Diagnosis is often made later in life, from 4 to 5 years of age. Children will present with speech difficulties as well as swallowing abnormalities. Hearing problems can also occur related to abnormal Eustachian tube function and middle ear infections.
